Kids Life Studio® Coach Academy
In the world of kids' life coaching, where we navigate the delicate balance of guiding young minds through their formative years, the concept of gratitude stands out as a beacon of positivity and resilience. It's not merely about teaching our coachees to be thankful; it's about instilling in them the practice of showing thankfulness. This subtle shift from feeling to action can have profound effects on their development and overall well-being. Let's dive into how we, as kids' life coaches, can harness the power of gratitude, making it our ally in nurturing more resilient and positive young individuals.
Before we explore the tools and resources to celebrate gratitude, it's essential to understand the science behind it. Research in positive psychology has consistently shown that gratitude is strongly associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships. For children, especially, developing a habit of showing gratitude can enhance their optimism, social support, and satisfaction with life and school.
This is why you need a toolkit of gratitude resources and these 8 ideas will get you started!
1. Gratitude Journaling: Encourage your coachees to keep a gratitude journal. The act of writing down things they are thankful for can significantly increase their awareness and appreciation of the positive aspects of their lives. Make it a fun and creative activity by using colorful pens, stickers, and personalized notebooks that you provide them as part of their startup coaching toolkit. They will love it if you 'sell' it to them in such a way that they see the benefits! Although a point to remember is that not all children enjoy writing and usually it is the girls who relish in this creative outlet so be prepared to adapt.
2. Gratitude Jar: Creating a gratitude jar where kids can drop daily notes of things they're thankful for is an essential part of any coaching programme. This habit should be nurtured as a daily practice but for some families who may be short on time, weekly may be more realistic. Periodically, you can have a coaching session where you read these notes together, celebrating the small and big wins. This tangible representation of gratitude can be incredibly impactful.
3. Thank-You Notes: Foster a culture of expressing thanks through handwritten notes. When I moved to England from South Africa in 2014, I noticed that children here are taught this very special approach at a young age. I have received numerous thank you notes from clients and colleagues in England and I believe this culture of saying thank you is an essential precursor to nurturing gratitude. Encourage your coachees to write thank-you notes to family members, friends, teachers, or anyone they're grateful for. This practice not only strengthens their relationships but also reinforces the importance of showing appreciation.
4. Gratitude Circle: Start or end your group or family coaching sessions with a gratitude circle, where each child or family member shares something they're thankful for. This group activity can create a positive atmosphere and encourage kids to listen and learn from each other's perspectives. Using a "talking stick" or "gratitude object" to pass around to reflect taking turns is also helpful when doing this activity.
5. Gratitude Crafts: Engage kids in making gratitude crafts, such as gratitude trees, where they attach leaves with written notes of what they're thankful for or they create a mobile with gratitude notes. They can also trace around their hands and write their high five gratitude in the fingers and this can be used in both the tree and mobile or as a standalone resource to be put up on their mirror. These visual and hands-on activities make the concept of gratitude more tangible and memorable.
6. Digital Gratitude: In today's digital age, encourage kids to use technology positively by sending e-thank you notes or creating digital gratitude collages. This can be particularly appealing to older kids and can seamlessly integrate gratitude into their digital lives. Whilst we don't encourage the use of technology with our younger coachees, it is important to harness potential in teens using methods they feel most comfortable with but in small measures.
7. Gratitude Memory Box: Creating a Gratitude Memory Box is a meaningful way to foster gratitude within every family. By decorating a box to keep notes of appreciation, ticket stubs, photographs, medals, trinkets and keepsakes is something everyone can participate in. During special family times, these boxes can be used to celebrate and remember the good in their lives. This activity strengthens family bonds and builds a lasting habit of gratitude, making the Gratitude Memory Box a treasured keepsake of positive memories and emotions.
8. Gratitude Reflections Bedtime Routine: Incorporate gratitude into the daily bedtime routine by reminding your coachee to share three things they were grateful for that day. with their parents This can become a cherished one-on-one time that helps families end their day on a positive note. This routine encourages children to find gratitude in everyday moments and can significantly improve their overall mood and outlook on life.
Even when you explore and share gratitude resources, it's crucial to remember that the essence of teaching gratitude lies in modelling the behaviour ourselves. By showing thankfulness in your own interactions and expressing genuine appreciation for the small things, means that you are setting a powerful example for your coachees.
Incorporating gratitude into your coaching practices doesn't just benefit your coachees; it enriches your life too. As we make gratitude our best friend, we open the door to a more fulfilling and resilient way of living, both for ourselves and for the young lives we are privileged to guide.
Let's commit to bringing these ideas to life in our coaching sessions, creating a ripple effect of positivity and resilience. By making gratitude a cornerstone of our practice, we empower our coachees to build a solid foundation for a happy and fulfilling life.
