How to Get Clients Without Trying So Hard

We’ve all been there. That awkward moment when someone casually asks the question:
“So, what do you do?”

In my early career as a Kids Life Coach, I used to stumble through the answer. I would try so hard to get people to understand my work that I often ended up overexplaining. To be honest, I’m blushing even now thinking about those awkward early conversations!

These days, my answer is pretty simple and playful:
“I play for a living.”

That one sentence sparks curiosity, creates conversation, and opens doors. Why? Because it’s authentic, aligned with what I do, and it invites people in rather than overwhelming them.

But it wasn’t always this way for me. Like many coaches, I used to believe that if I just explained enough, people would “get it” and sign up. The truth is, when we push too hard, we can come across as unsure, desperate, or even salesy none of which builds trust. I know this because I have personally made these mistakes!

Why Sales Drop (And What To Do About It)

If you’ve noticed that your sales have slowed or you’re struggling to attract new clients, it often comes down to one of three things:

  1. Overexplaining – Talking too much about what you do instead of showing the results and transformation that you get with your proven neuroscience based Play Based Coaching System®! Our system is working across the world in different languages, cultures and demographics. It is fully adaptable to meet the needs of each individual child...so why give the parent broad brushed strokes. Isolate what you can do for THEIR child...not the whole worlds children!

  2. Overcomplicating – Using jargon or technical terms that confuse rather than connect. Yes you know your stuff. After all if you certified as a Kids Life Studio® coach, you put in the hard work. We don't believe in quick fixes and your foundation is rock solid. But...does the parent you're talking to need to know about the Hippocampus right off the bat? Keep it simple and light!

  3. Overtrying – Coming across as pushy instead of letting your passion and authenticity shine through. I have seen this with sales people who have spoken to me. They use fear and scarcity based tactics to draw me in. The mistake I made decades ago was that coming from a teaching background, I had all the heart but none of the skills to market and sell my services. So I did courses and "learnt from the best..." (or so I thought...) Until I found out the hard way that masculine based sales seldom close the deal with parents who are looking for a softer touch. Let your testimonials speak for themselves. Publish them on your website or on your Kids Life Studio® Coach Profile

The fix? Keep it simple. Be yourself. And most importantly, remember that as a Play Based Coach®, you really do play for a livingso let that joy and confidence radiate in everything you do.

A Practical Tip You Can Try Today

Instead of explaining your process, start sharing your stories. Talk from the heart about the child who rediscovered their confidence, the parent who found hope, or the moment when play unlocked resilience. People connect with stories and outcomes, not complicated explanations. Just be you and share your success with love and good intentions!

The Bottom Line

Getting clients doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, when you stop trying so hard, you’ll often find that people lean in more. Your passion, authenticity, and joy are your best “sales tools.”

So next time someone asks, “What do you do?” try answering with something simple, curious, and true to you. You might be surprised at how the conversation unfolds.
