What is success to you as a Kids Life Coach? How do you measure if you are doing well or not? This is something most novice coaches miss out on entirely. Simply because you don't know what you don't know until you know what you know!
That being said, the most seasoned life coaches for children are the one's who understand these three metrics of success on a deep intuitive level:
1. Client transformation is easy to quantify (when you know how!)
2. What can be measured, can be managed (if you have the right tools!)
3. Inner work is more than just window-dressing (when you surround yourself with the right people!)
As the founder of Kids Life Studio® and having coached children since 2003, my metrics of success are dependent on the success of the children that I coach. Yet, I have seen that the success of the children that I support has been impacted by my inner state.
Which is why I am so super passionate about professional supervision (catch my video on this topic by clicking here!) and I enjoy investing my time and energy into developing new and established coaches through ongoing support and mentorship. Those coaches that have been through my certification training know I say this a lot...
"There's no wrong way, just the long way!"
When you have the correct guidance and support, you don't have to figure things out for yourself. The thing is, I started coaching children before it was a trend and before it was a nice to have certification...Since I had nobody guiding me because there were no training programmes back then, it took me a while to realise this one very important thing.
"Your health is your wealth."
When I lost my health and ended up in hospital (you will know my story if you have read my Secret Parent Book) I could not sustain success coaching children. I had to Press Pause on my intentions and take care of myself first. Most of us who are in the coaching or therapy space for children do this work not only because we want to make a difference but also because we may have our own childhood scars we are still healing. In a recent professional supervision session, we spoke through the different childhood archetypes that show up in the "healing" professions. Knowing this and being able to move through this sometimes takes a person who has been there and done that (like me...) to hold up the mirror before you crash and burn! (Click here to watch the video on this!)
The metrics of success as a life coach for children is not only about the money in your bank account or the number of clients you reach but about the micro moments of joy you feel and see when a family transforms and shows:
Calm rather than chaos.
Resourcefulness rather than despondence.
Rejuvenation rather than depletion.
Hope rather than hopelessness.
Resilience rather than defeat.
All of these can only happen quickly and seamlessly in your clients lives, when you embody this in your own life. If your life is chaotic (as mine sometimes has been!) or you are constantly feeling despondent at not getting clients (been there done that!) or you are feeling depleted because you are giving from your cup rather than your overflow (guilty!) or hopelessness has stepped in leading to defeat (a few times over the years!)
Then you are in the right place.
I don't claim to have it all together or to get it perfect because I am human after all. As a coaching psychologist with Doctoral research on Adverse Childhood Experiences in the University of Oxford's Psychiatry department, I understand the neuroscience behind performance. So I can assure. you that if you get these 3 metrics right in your kids life coaching practice, you will achieve success. Let's recap:
1. Quantifiable client transformation
2. Measuring and managing yourself
3. Doing the inner work
